Flood Watch in Effect for Dominica as of 6am

Issued at 6am on Tuesday, October 6, 2020

A Flood Watch means that flooding is possible.

The Meteorological Service has issued a

  • Flash Flood WATCH for Dominica

  • Until 6pm Tuesday October 6, 2020

  • A trough system has been generating unstable conditions across Dominica. Radar and satellite imagery indicated that light to moderate and isolated heavy shower and thunderstorm activity affected Dominica during the overnight period. Shower and thunderstorm activity are projected to continue across the island during most of today. Additionally, the ground is now saturated due to rainfall over the past several days. Flash flooding is therefore possible with an increased likelihood of landslides. The flood watch may be upgraded to a warning should conditions warrant.

  • Model projected rainfall is for accumulations of between 2 to 3 inches (50 to 75mm) with higher amounts in elevated areas.

People in areas that are prone to flooding, landslide and falling rocks should be vigilant and exercise extreme caution during today. Take all precautionary measures to protect life and property.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS FOR DOMINICA

· Shallow rivers, streams, gutters and ravines may temporarily overflow their banks and flood surrounding areas

· Landslides due to intense rainfall as well as rock falls from overhanging cliffs

The Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the situation and provide the necessary updates.
