FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 12PM SATURDAY 22nd AUGUST, 2020

***RESIDENTS IN DOMINICA ADVISED TO EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION AS A FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR DOMINICA UNTIL 12 NOON TODAY… THE CENTER OF TROPICAL STORM LAURA NOW MOVING OVER THE US VIRGIN ISLANDS***

A Flood Warning means that flooding is already occurring or will occur during the warning period.

At 5am, Tropical Storm Laura was located near latitude 17.6 North and longitude 65.5 West or about 320 miles northwest of Dominica. Laura is moving towards the west near 21mph away from Dominica with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph and extending 205 miles from the center. On the forecast track, the centre of the Laura will continue to move over the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico during today.

EXPECTED WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR DOMINICA

Tropical storm Laura do not pose a direct threat to Dominica, However, unstable conditions generated by Laura are expected to produce showers, which could be moderate to heavy at times and thunderstorm activity across Dominica during this morning. Gusty winds are likely in areas of showers and thunderstorms.

Rainfall projection: 1 to 3 inches (25 to 75mm) with higher amounts in elevated areas. Flash flooding is therefore expected during the period. As a result, The Flood Warning remains in effect for Dominica until 12pm today Saturday, August 22. This warning may be extended should conditions warrant.

A deterioration in sea conditions can be expected during today with waves peaking between 7 to 10ft and a Small Craft Warning remains in effect for above normal seas.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS FOR DOMINICA

·      Shallow rivers, streams, gutters and ravines may overflow their banks and flood surrounding areas. Motorist and pedestrians should look out for flooded roadways.

·       Landslides due to intense rainfall as well as rock falls from overhanging cliffs

·       Seas will become dangerous for sea-bathers and small-craft operators

·       Loose objects may become missiles during times of gusty winds
