WEATHER INFORMATION STATEMENT ON TROPICAL DEPRESSION 13

Issued: Thursday, August 20th, 2020 at 12 noon

Tropical Depression #13 formed last night from a tropical wave which was being monitored in the central Atlantic. At 11am, Tropical Depression 13 was located near 16.0N 52.0W or about 620 miles east of Dominica. Present movement is to the west north west near 21 mph.

Tropical Depression 13 is expected to develop into a tropical storm later today. On its current track, the system is expected to approach the northern Leewards tomorrow Friday, passing just north of the islands late Friday into Saturday.

As the system nears the Leeward Islands, an increase in showers and possible thunderstorm activity is anticipated across Dominica from tomorrow and into Saturday. Moderate to heavy showers are likely from the overnight period. Current rainfall projection is 1 to 3 inches (25 to 75mm) with higher amounts in elevated areas. Gusty winds near 25mph are expected, particularly near showers.

A flood watch or warning may be required from Friday evening.

A deterioration in sea conditions is expected Friday afternoon with waves increasing to 10.0ft overnight. A Small Craft Warning will be issued at 6pm Friday 21st August.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS

·         Shallow rivers, streams, gutters and ravines may overflow their banks and flood surrounding areas

·         Landslides and rock falls from overhanging cliffs

·         Landslides due to intense rainfall

·         Seas will become dangerous for sea-bathers and small-craft owners

·         Loose objects become missiles in gusty winds
